There was a scare in the Big Bear eagle’s nest over the weekend when Jackie vanished overnight, leaving Shadow to tend to the two eggs.
Fans got concerned when Jackie took off Friday afternoon and didn't return to the nest until around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Jenny Voisard with Friends of Big Bear Valley, which operates the eagle cam, told KNX News’ Karen Adams it’s unclear where Jackie went.
“It could have been some territorial defense that she needed to do that took her out of the habitat area,” she said. “There have been visiting eagles and ravens and hawks, and it could have been that, you know, she couldn't get back in time. Eagles don't fly well at night, so she might have needed to have stayed put. She could have just needed a girls' night out.”
Voissard said Shadow stepped up to take care of the eggs.
“And he is no stranger to incubating overnight, so he did a very good job,” she said. “He did wing slaps and he wasn't having anyone coming around those eggs at night.”
The eggs are expected to hatch in early April.
