Gabrielle Union, 48, sat down with actress and talk-show host Taraji P. Henson to reflect on her stepdaughter’s gender transition, as well as the effects that COVID-19 has had on her family.

Union appeared on Henson’s new talk show “Peace of Mind With Taraji,” which appeared on Facebook Watch.

"Zaya's peace is nonnegotiable. As Zaya gathered more language she was able to tell us about her identity. She was able to tell us about her sexuality. She was able to tell us, 'I’m trans,'" Union said of her stepdaughter.

She added: "And she says, 'I've come out a few times ... I came out to my teacher in the third grade, and then when you guys posted that picture of me in Chicago at my birthday party.'"

Union explained to Henson that the photo was of Zaya standing next to her birthday cake.

"That picture was dissected on certain Black blogs and the comments were guessing as to who Zaya was and why ... she said, 'I felt like I was outed and I was just standing next to my cake,'" Union said.

Zaya's father is retired NBA Dwayne Wade, who is married to Union.

In an interview with People, the star has admitted that she has gotten to know her husband, Wade, on a deeper level since the quarantine.

"I think it has been hard during the quarantine because we are in the same space," explained Union. "I have not been home in any kind of consistent way since I have been an adult, so just getting to know my husband, which sounds crazy, I was like, ‘Oh, every day, every day you’re going to be here, okay ahh yeah I guess this is healthy.’ "
