Hazmat teams investigate suspicious substance at L.A. City Hall East

A white powdery substance discovered in a mail room at Los Angeles City Hall East prompted a hazardous materials investigation Thursday, and two people were evaluated at the scene by paramedics.

According to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart, firefighter and Los Angeles Police Department hazmat teams responded to the 200 block of North Main Street shortly after 2:40 p.m. to a report of a suspicious white substance in a first-floor mail room.

Two people were evaluated for unknown medical complications, but there were no immediate reports of anyone being taken to a hospital.

It was unclear how the white substance made it into the mail room or what the substance was.

Investigators were continuing the investigation Thursday afternoon.
