HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KNX) –Huntington Beach City Council is moving forward with a motion that would research options that would restrict kids’ access to books deemed “obscene” from the city’s public libraries.
The motion moved ahead following a 4 to 3 vote Tuesday night. The motion by Mayor Pro Tem Gracey Van Der Mark puts the City Manager and City Attorney in charge of creating a system that screens material from the public library that is considered “obscene” or “pornographic.”
Before the vote took place, several residents took to the podium to express their outrage over the motion.
“Keep your milly, unintelligent lack of knowledge, power-grabbing, pandering show-boaty paws off our library!” a woman yelled.
“We don't have any evidence that pornography is a big problem among the library materials,” a man said.
One resident said the city council should focus on other issues.
“Stay in your freaking lane and work on the city budget, homelessness, crime, and potholes,” she said.
Some residents, however, voiced their support for keeping some books out of the hands of children.
“We're saying that this should not be available to minors,” a man said. “We're not saying that, ‘Hey, everybody should take these books and we're all going to out and burn them now.’”
The council said it wants a report from the city attorney and manager in September.
