LOS ANGELES (KNX) - Jimmy Kimmel received backlash on social media Monday night after he lay on stage while “Abbot Elementary” creator and star Quinta Brunson accepted an award on stage.

Kimmel, who was co-presenting Writing for a Comedy Series with Will Arnett, was dragged onto the stage by Arnett. The late night talk show host laid on the stage as Arnett told the crowd Kimmel “just got into the skinny margaritas” after losing in his category.

Kimmel stayed on the stage even after Brunson was announced the winner. Brunson, 32, went on the stage to collect her award while Kimmel stayed on the stage. Arnett appeared to try to grab Kimmel but then went to the side of the stage.

Brunson looked down at Kimmel and said, “Jimmy, wake up. I won.” He is then seen giving her a thumbs up. Brunson then jokingly told Kimmel to hold her phone and went on with her speech.

When asked about Kimmel’s stunt backstage, Brunson told reporters, “I felt like the bit didn’t bother me that much. I don’t know what the internet thinks.”

The internet, particularly Twitter, called Kimmel’s stunt  “disrespectful”, with many saying he took away Brunson’s moment.

“Quinta Brunson deserved better than giving her acceptance over Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘dead’ body,” Twitter user gpirnia wrote.

“Jimmy Kimmel should have left the stage during Quinta’s speech. Highly disrespectful #Emmys,” Philip Lewis tweeted.

“White male privilege is laying on the ground & expecting a Black woman to just step around you while she accepts her hard-earned award,” cynicaltomorrow tweeted.

Brunson went on to tell reporters that Kimmel did advocate for “Abbott Elementary”, adding that Kimmel “gave (Brunson) my first big late night spot and was one of the first people to see Abbott, and one of the first people... He Instagram messaged me that he saw this comedy and thought it was one of the greatest comedies of all time, and he was so excited it was going to be on ABC.”

“Tomorrow maybe I’ll be mad at him. I’m going to be on his show on Wednesday, so I might punch him in the face,” she joked.

This was Brunson’s first-ever Emmy win. She’s the third Black writer and the second Black female writer to win the award.
