Businesses in the Eagle Rock area have been the latest target of smash-and-grab robberies and retail thefts.

KNX News’ Margaret Carrero reported that Councilman Kevin de León plans to put $100,000 towards patrols to combat this problem. According to de León, the dedicated patrols will be along Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards.

Carrero spoke to Luciano Alcorta, the owner of Malbec Market, which was the target of one of these robberies.

“They went to the cash register, they took a bunch of wine, and since the alarm is very loud, I don't think they were welcome to stay,” Alcorta said. “So it was only one guy. It seemed like one guy and so he was here for like less than five minutes.”

Captain Gary Walters with the LAPD’s Northeast L.A. Station said that with the extra funding, the department will also be able to conduct follow-ups on any investigations to track down and identify suspects.

Walters said the funding will provide the department with around two to four officers on additional foot beats several days a week for the next couple of months.

Alcorta said that he thinks additional patrols will make a difference in his neighborhood.

Carrero reported that de León hopes to have the fund approved by the end of this week or early next week.
