On Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved an ordinance that bans a city employee or a sworn officer from “moonlighting” with ICE or a company that assists with the Department of Homeland Security.
Councilmember Monica Rodriguez introduced the proposed ordinance and told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener that “this is about making people trust their local government.”
“I don't want them working in fear that there are going to be city employees who are off-duty [from] city time working in coordination with the actions that are taking place by the federal government,” she said.
The new ICE “moonlighting” law included a rarely-used urgency clause, meaning it takes effect immediately.
Council members previously created an ordinance that banned the Los Angeles Police Department from participating with ICE unless the feds have a judicial warrant.
