LOS ANGELES (KNX) — A Reseda woman charged with murdering her three young children last year appeared Monday in a downtown Los Angeles court.
Liliana Carrillo, 30, declined to enter a plea to the three murder charges filed against her in April 2021 connected with the deaths of her three kids — three-year-old Joanna, two-year-old Terry, and six-month-old Sierra.
Carrillo has been in custody in L.A. County since last year after being arrested in Ponderosa, Calif., in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, after allegedly attempting to carjack a man in Kern County.
The children’s father, Erik Denton, and his family repeatedly alerted L.A. County child services and police to Carrillo’s alleged mental health problems prior to their deaths. In court statements, Denton said Carrillo suffered from deteriorating mental health for years beforehand.
“She is not taking care of herself and has lost touch with reality,” Denton wrote in court filings as he attempted to gain custody of the children back from Carrillo last year. “She is extremely paranoid and acts impulsively and erratically.”
After her arrest, Carrillo admitted in a jailhouse interview that she drowned the children in a bathtub.
Court records have not indicated whether Carrillo’s attorneys intend to pursue an insanity defense.
Carrillo’s carjacking charges are still open in Kern County. She is being held in L.A. County on $6 million bail.
