LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Authorities are offering a $50,000 reward to anyone who can help provide information leading to the arrest of the suspect who gunned down a tow truck employee as he helped a stranded driver in Downtown Los Angeles in November of 2020.

Michael McGarry, 26, was shot and killed Nov. 15, 2020, around 7:35 p.m. in the area of Enterprise and Mateo streets, according to the LAPD.

During a news conference Monday morning at LAPD headquarters, city councilmember Kevin de Leon said it was McGarry’s first day on the job. He finished providing a battery jump and a gallon of gas to a stranded driver when he was approached by a gunman and shot in the neck, de Leon said.

Police said McGarry, father to a 5-year-old boy, may have been killed in an attempted robbery of the stranded driver he was helping. There may have been another suspect involved, according to police.

De Leon said the City of L.A. is offering $50,000 in the hopes that it will move “somebody to say something” so that the McGarry’s family can get closure.

McGarry’s mother made a public plea for help to solve her son’s murder.

“My son was a good man,” his mother said. “He was a good father, and a brother, and an uncle — an exceptional person with a big heart, who would do anything for anybody.”

She added that their family was still mourning the loss of her first-born son from a few months prior.

“My family does want justice for Michael. He deserves it; nobody deserves to die this way,” she continued. “No child deserves to grow up without his father.”

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call LAPD Central Bureau Homicide Det. Hector Salas at (213) 486-8700; (877) 527-3247; or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
