Los Angeles County has seen more than 1,000 daily COVID-19 cases for 11 straight days. If California was still using its tier system, the county would again find itself back in the purple.
Dr. John Swartzberg, a professor of public health at University of California, Berkeley, told KNX the trajectory of daily infections doesn't look good.
“The slope of the increase is disturbingly fast. The time to stop that slope from going up is now, not when we’re at a lot higher number of cases per day,” said Swartzberg.
According to County Public Health data, COVID cases have increased 700 percent since June 15, when the state re-opened and relaxed mask guidance. Swartzberg agrees with LA County health officials’ decision to reinstate the indoor mask mandate. The concern for public health officials is that the coronavirus may mutate to the point where not even the current vaccines are effective.
“All of us, those vaccinated and those not vaccinated, are back in the same position,” he said.
Swartzberg said that's why it's important for everyone to get vaccinated to stop the corona virus from mutating further.
