The Los Angeles Police Department released bodycam footage on Friday night of the fatal shooting of a dog in a Canoga Park apartment.

Jameson, a 2-year-old Golden Bernedoodle, was shot by an LAPD officer on Saturday night.

The video, posted on the department’s YouTube page, chronicles the details leading up to the officer shooting Jameson the dog.

The video starts with an introduction from Capt. Mike Bland with the LAPD before going into the 911 call. In the call, a woman tells the operator she’s calling for a wellness check on her neighbor because she heard her scream “Oh my God” for 20 minutes.

“They’re just screaming like something horrible happened,” the neighbor told the operator.

The video then goes to body camera footage from the officer who shot Jameson. The officers are seen knocking on the door. After a few moments, Marie Marseille opens the door and says, “Hi,” and the officer standing by the door says, “Hi. Oh, can you put your dog away, please?”

Jameson is then heard barking in the background as the officer standing farther away says, “Put your dog away!”

The door closes, and the two officers talk about Jameson. The officer who is standing farther away says, “I ain’t getting bit by that, bro.”

The door opens again, and the officer by the door asks Marseille, “Is the dog put away?”

Marseille responds, “Sorry. He’s not…he’s not aggressive at all. I apologize.”

As the woman turns away, James comes out and goes toward the officer who was standing away from the door. The officer pulls out his gun, and Jameson starts barking. The officer then fires multiple shots.

The department also released bodycam footage from the officer who was standing close to the door; however, Marseille is in front of the camera when the shooting takes place.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division is investigating the officer.

Mayor Karen Bass issued the following statement:

“What I saw on the bodycam footage is disturbing and tragic. The Chief and I agreed that it was important to release the bodycam footage swiftly. While the investigation is ongoing, I am very concerned about why shots were fired and Jameson was killed. This shooting makes clear that while LAPD provides officers with written guidance on the use of force and pets, this is not enough.

“I have directed the Police Commission President and the Chief to examine the Department's Use of Force policy on Dog Encounters to determine best practices from around the country, and use this opportunity to update the LAPD's overall tactics, policies, and training related to the use of lethal force to increase safety for everyone – officers, Angelenos and their pets.”

The Justice for Jameson GoFundMe is over $210,000.
