The Los Angeles Unified School District is under federal investigation over how it handles teachers accused of sexual misconduct.
The U.S. Department of Education said the district may be reassigning some teachers during investigations instead of fully removing them from student-facing jobs. The investigation appears tied to a 2024 agreement with the teachers' union about how staff are notified and reassigned during investigations.
LA Times education reporter Howard Blume, who broke the story, told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian that this may come down to how policy language is being interpreted.
“A critic might say it's like ready fire aim maybe on this one, but maybe not, you know, we'll see what their case looks like,” he said. “But certainly, the district and the teachers union are saying that the federal government is just not interpreting language properly in this case, which, given education jargon, sometimes it can be very difficult to do. So the investigation will determine whether LAUSD's policies violate federal Title IX law.”
In a statement, an LAUSD spokesperson says in part that the district follows strict Title IX procedures, and that employees accused of misconduct are pulled away from campuses during investigations.
