The L.A. Unified School District is looking to grow an initiative that would bring more farm-fresh produce to schools.

KNX News’ Margaret Carrero reported that LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the district has accessed an excess of 90,000 pounds of locally sourced produce since October.

This has benefitted about 140 schools across the district, but the goal is to scale up to benefit all of the district’s schools. The next step is to formalize a procurement process.

“So we can access, procure, buy fresh produce, fruits, vegetables directly from our local farmers,” Carvalho said. “That request for proposal will be out on the streets within the next two weeks and we will be one of the very first districts in the nation to leverage this opportunity at the scale that we are leveraging.”
