Local pharmacist has been working days on end to make sure people in SoCal get COVID-19 vaccinations

A local pharmacist has been working days on end, to make sure people in Southern California get the COVID-19 vaccinations they need. He's our KNX Hero of the Week, and his dedication is saving lives!

When the vaccines first became available, Dr. Richard Dang adjusted his schedule at USC's School of Pharmacy to give every possible hour he had to give shots. "I'd spend 12, 15, 16-hour days just to get the vaccine clinics operating through a variety of different partners," explains Dr. Dang, "including USC Keck Medical Center and the City of Los Angeles.”

"I have been working every day since the vaccine has been authorized and became available in Los Angeles County," says the USC Assistant Professor. "My only day off so far, was the MLK holiday."

Dr. Dang has given shots at several locations, including Dodger Stadium. "I knew that pharmacists would play a big role in the healthcare system. I just didn't think that we would have this top-tier spotlight placed on us," says Dr. Dang, who's been working as a pharmacist for ten years.

Fourth-year pharmacy student Trevor Lee says Dr. Dang inspires everyone around him, especially his fellow colleagues at USC. "He stays up 'til 3-4am, to constantly work on scheduling, and making sure that all the [vaccination] sites are working together. All the students look up to him! It wouldn't be the same without him."

People getting their vaccines look up to him, too, with big smiles of relief!

"It just warms my heart," remarks Dr. Dang. "For so many people, this is their first time leaving their houses and being in that environment with other people. So, [this] may be their first one-on-one personal interaction with someone outside their immediate bubble. So, everyone who comes through the vaccination clinic is just so excited, and so happy! It just really warms my heart to bring some joy to everyone, especially during these dark times."
