A representative for the retail giant said, "As we prepare to deploy a new strategy to meet the needs of an ever-changing consumer and marketplace, we made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce by 3.5% to become a more streamlined company."
The locations impacted have been reported to be - Arlington, Virginia (Ballston); San Leandro, California (Bay Fair); Lihue, Hawaii (Kukui Grove); Tallahassee, Florida (Governor's Square); and Simi Valley, California (Simi Valley Town Center).
KNX News' Nataly Tavidian spoke to a few Simi Valley locals who say the closure could be devastating for the tight-knit community within the Simi Valley Town Center.
One who works nearby said the center is like a big family, and many employees from all the businesses know one another well. "We all go to each other's businesses here because we just want to keep this alive," she said.
For the Simi Valley Town Center, Macy's is an 'anchor store,' meaning, thanks to its notoriety and broad appeal, it serves as the prominent department store that attracts people and money to the center.
