Amalija Knavs, the mother of former first lady Melania Trump, has passed away, according to posts on social media from Trump.
“Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity. She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law. We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy,” she wrote on X.
Knavs, a native of Slovenia, was a textile worker who resided in the United States with her husband after their son-in-law became president in 2017. They were reportedly often seen around Washington after the Trumps took up residency in the White House.
As of 2016, the Knavses owned a house in Sevnica, a town in central Slovenia where Melania Trump attended primary school.
However, CNN reported that since the birth of their grandson Barron Trump in 2006, they spent most of their time in New York.
The couple became US citizens in 2018 after obtaining their citizenship through the sponsorship of their adult daughter, BBC reported. The process was done through a category the Trump administration wanted to end.
Knavs was 78 at the time of her passing. A cause of death was not shared.
