More men getting vasectomies after overturning of Roe v Wade

In the four months since the momentous June 24 Supreme Court decision that overturned the precedents set by the landmark Roe v. Wade decision and removed guaranteed abortion rights for all American women, multiple states have enacted their own abortion bans with varying degrees of leeway (and some with little to none at all).

And in direct correlation to this development, the nation has also seen a rise in one of the most common birth control procedures for men: vasectomies.

Iowa urologist Dr. Esgar Guarín told Business Insider that he’s seen a massive increase in the amount of men getting the snip, estimating he did about 30 to 40 procedures in any given month before, and that he had 20 new patients in line within 48 hours of the decision’s news hitting the public.

That increase has held sway, with vasectomies at his practice up nearly 100%.

Guarín cited numbers from the United Nations that estimated about 219 million women had tubal ligations, or “got their tubes tied,” worldwide in 2019, while only 16 million men got vasectomies.

“And that is because women are heavily invested in what pregnancy is, but men are not because we will never, ever know what it is to be pregnant. It doesn't matter how supportive we can be. We could be absolutely wonderful, but it doesn't matter,” Guarín said, calling the discrepancy “ridiculous.”

"We're not as invested, and because we're not as invested, women will take matters into their own hands because they're protecting themselves."

Now Guarín is working with Planned Parenthood in an effort to roll out a mobile-vasectomy clinic that would provide the procedure to men across the country for free. The goal, Guarín said, is to instill in men the want to ejaculate responsibly.

"For the longest time, we've been focused on women's reproduction and abortion, but why don't we talk more about the ones causing the pregnancies to begin with, which are those men who irresponsibly ejaculate?" Guarín said.
