Car thefts are on the rise in the San Fernando Valley.

Police said some of the car thieves are as young as 12. So far, police said there have been more than 130 arrests, including 19 minors. LAPD Chief Dominic Choi spoke to the police commission about this increase in car thefts.

“Where we're seeing this increase is in Operations-Valley Bureau, where an overall increase of 29.3%, or 608 more motor vehicle thefts this year than compared to last,” he said. “And focusing more narrowly or more detailed, North Hollywood division has an increase of 39%, or 134 more. And this is the largest numerical increase in the city.”

Hyundai and Kia cars tend to be the most targeted. There’s an event from May 17-19 in Eagle Rock Plaza to help Hyundai owners install updates to their anti-theft software and get a free steering wheel lock.

Choi also warned that thieves have started to clone key fobs to steal Camaros.
