LOS ANGELES (KNX) - The matriarch of a decades-old taqueria in Silver Lake has died after being hit by a car in Echo Park.

74-year-old Maria Esther Valdivia was walking in a crosswalk on Scott Avenue on the afternoon of May 22 when she was struck by the vehicle, the LAPD said. The driver stopped to render aid and cooperated with the investigation.

Valvidia was a mother to four, grandmother to 14, and the founder of Tacos Delta, a family business she helped start in 1981. Her daughter, Irma Gonzalez, remembered her as the type of person who always tried to help others.

“One thing that she always liked to do was to feed the homeless or feed people, because she said that she suffered hunger when she was a child,” Gonzalez said.

“Tacos Delta was her life, she was a morning regular and enjoyed serving food to all,” the restaurant said in a statement on Instagram. “She had a goal to make everyone feel at home and as part of the family.”

A table in Tacos Delta’s outdoor dining area was filled Tuesday with flowers, candles, and cards surrounding framed pictures of Valvidia.

“We have a lot of customers coming to give their condolences and share their care for what we’re going through. That’s what’s keeping us afloat,” Gonzalez said.
