On Friday, Sir David Beckham was honored with a star in the sports entertainment category, as the U.S. hosts the World Cup.

He was joined by his wife Victoria Beckham, and friend and actor Tom Cruise as guest speakers.

“This is a Hollywood story,” said Cruise. “A boy who believed in something bigger than himself had to work for every opportunity he received and went on to influence his sport culture around the world and create opportunities for generations to follow.”

During his career, Beckham won league titles in four countries: England, Spain, France, and the U.S. Beckham said he fought to bring soccer to the main stage in the greatest sporting nation and was proud to see the “incredible growth” of the sport.

The ceremony happened while L.A. is a host city for the World Cup, where the U.S. will play Paraguay in the city.

KNX News’ Karen Adams spoke to fans of Beckham and the sport on what this moment means to them.

“Perfect timing, you know, the game is in LA,” said one fan, “He's one of the faces of Hollywood, he moved to LA Galaxy to promote the sport, he's just star power, so he deserves a star.”

Beckham’s star is near the Ovation Hollywood shopping complex.
