(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- TikTok has been under fire, with some states banning the use of the app on state-owned cellphones because of national security concerns.
Tech experts are also concerned about the impact of TikTok on teenagers' mental health. Studies have already shown that social media "likes" have a chemical impact on the brain.
"It's better than cookies, it's better than food, it's better than ice cream, it's better than sex," Shelly Palmer told the WBBM Noon Business Hour on Thursday.
Palmer said the TikTok algorithm is optimized for endless scrolling on your phone -- and social media addiction.
He adds that Tik Tok, and social media in general, can drive behaviors that adults never had to experience, such as mass cyberbullying.
"None of us had to deal with that. These are really tough problems for little minds. They're not little adults, they're children," Palmer said.
The Seattle School District is suing the big social media companies. Palmer calls it a symbolic gesture to force change.
"To make a point,” he adds, “that there should be some very harsh restrictions and better monitoring and better understanding of what's going on with social media.”
