In an interview with Russell Brand released Friday, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson said that he loves former President Donald Trump – even though he has reportedly said the opposite in the past.
“Where am I on Trump now? I love Trump,” said Carlson. “Personally, I think we’re going to see Trump’s emergence as the most significant thing to happen in American politics in 100 years, because he reoriented the Republican party – against the wishes of Republican leaders.”
After parting ways with Fox earlier this year, Carlson launched a the new “Tucker Carlson Originals” project on Twitter. Prior to the split, Carlson’s messages mocking Trump advisors were revealed through a lawsuit filed against Fox by Dominion Voting Systems.
“The hosts Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham, as well as others at the company, repeatedly insulted and mocked Trump advisers, including Sidney Powell and Rudolph W. Giuliani, in messages with each other in the weeks after the election, according to a legal filing made public on Thursday in a defamation lawsuit against Fox by Dominion Voting Systems,” said The New York Times.
According to the Daily Beast, Carlson also wrote in a text that he hated Trump “passionately,” but has been working to turn the narrative around since at least March.
“I’m pretty straightforward; I love Trump,” Carlson said in an interview cited by the outlet. “Like, as a person, I think Trump is funny and insightful. And I said this to Trump when he called me, you know, all wounded about those texts. That was a moment in time where I was absolutely infuriated.”
During the interview this week, Carlson told Brand that he particularly appreciates Trump for the former president’s stance on the War in Ukraine.
“I’m so grateful he has that position, he’s right. And, everyone in Washington is wrong – everyone. And Trump is right on that question.”
In a Truth Social post, Trump thanked Carlson for the shout out.
“Thank you Tucker,” said the current 2024 presidential candidate. “So many lives wasted, so many lives to be saved!”
So, what are Trump’s views on Ukraine?
In a Reuters interview published June 29, Trump – described by the outlet as a “longtime admirer of Russian President Vladimir Putin” – thinks it is time to broker peace. Recently, an uprising by Russian mercenary force the Wagner Group and its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin has come as a blow to Putin.
Russia began an unlawful invasion of Ukraine last February, leading to more than 9,000 civilian deaths as of June 30. Since the start of the invasion, the U.S. has been providing support to Ukraine and Biden has called Putin a “pariah” for attacking the country. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has alsoproposed a 10-point peace plan that calls on Russia to withdraw all of its troops.
Trump said that the Ukrainian government in Kyiv might have to concede some territory to Russia in order to stop the war.
“I think the biggest thing that the U.S. should be doing right now is making peace - getting Russia and Ukraine together and making peace. You can do it,” he told Reuters. “This is the time to do it, to get the two parties together to force peace.”
In the past, Trump has said he’s the only man who could stop “World War III.” However, a recent analysis in Slate warned that Trump’s comments should be taken with a grain of salt.
“His idea of a deal rests on the usual combination of personal relationships (animosity toward Zelenskyy, illusory friendship with Putin), naïveté (the notion that those relationships would drive either leader to abandon his interests), a lack of understanding about the nature and stakes of this war, and a complete indifference toward its outcome,” the outlet said. It also predicted he would halt arms deliveries to Ukraine and ask Putin “for a favor.”
