The Writers Guild and the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers reached a tentative agreement, the union announced on Sunday night.

The union also announced that WGA picketing has been suspended.

“We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional – with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership,” the union said in an email to its members.

The union went on to say that once the “Memorandum of Agreement with the AMPTP is complete, the Negotiating Committee will vote on whether to recommend the agreement and send it on to the WGAW Board and WGAE Council for approval.”

“The Board and Council will then vote on whether to authorize a contract ratification vote by the membership,” the union continued. “If that authorization is approved, the Board and Council would also vote on whether to lift the restraining order and end the strike at a certain date and time (to be determined) pending ratification. This would allow writers to return to work during the ratification vote, but would not affect the membership’s right to make a final determination on contract approval.”

The leadership votes are scheduled to take place on Tuesday at this time.

The union emphasized that writers are not to return to work unless authorized by the WGA. It also encouraged members to join the SAG-AFTRA picket lines.

SAG-AFTRA congratulated the WGA, writing, “SAG-AFTRA congratulates the WGA on reaching a tentative agreement with the AMPTP after 146 days of incredible strength, resiliency and solidarity on the picket lines. While we look forward to reviewing the WGA and AMPTP’s tentative agreement, we remain committed to achieving the necessary terms for our members.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass released the following statement after the tentative deal was announced:

“After a nearly five-month long strike, I am grateful that the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have reached a fair agreement and I’m hopeful that the same can happen soon with the Screen Actors Guild. This historic strike impacted so many across Los Angeles and across the nation. Now, we must focus on getting the entertainment industry, and all the small businesses that depend on it, back on their feet and stronger than ever before.”

The WGA and AMPTP returned to the bargaining table on Sept.
