The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement is asking for the public’s help identifying a young man caught on video harassing and kicking a sea lion in La Jolla in San Diego.
The video, obtained by NBC 7 San Diego, shows the young man with his fist up, kicking the sea lion that’s sitting on a wall. The sea lion does not fight back. Laughter could be heard in the background of the video.
Robyn Davidoff, who serves as the Chair of the Sierra Club Seal Society, said she’s shocked by the video.
“Whether it's a sea lion or a person or someone to assault somebody else or a wild animal, it's just uncalled for,” she told KNX News’ Emily Valdez. “And to have the people that were watching or videoing it and laughing, they're just as guilty as this person that actually committed the crime. They’re accomplices.”
Sea lions are federally protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Harassing or injuring them is illegal, and people who do it may be sent to jail.
