
Paul McCartney has etched out a piece of music real estate when it comes to Christmas songs. Flip over to your favorite station in December and you’ll most likely hear the gentle synth chords usher in the lyrics for “Wonderful Christmastime.”
The mood is right / The spirits up / We're here tonight / And that's enough
But what if that Christmas classic you’ve grown so fond of blasting in the car is really a siren song for witchcraft? (Cue “DUN DUN DUUUUUN” sound effect).
That’s the message one Twitter user suggested in 2019 that continues to gain traction, today. @theryangeorge says there is a hidden meaning behind McCartney’s classic. “Paul McCartney's ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ is about friends practicing witchcraft but then someone walks in and they have to suddenly play it cool,” he tweets, alongside a screen shot of the lyrics.
It’s worth noting there’s some black magic at play in the music video for “Wonderful Christmastime.” The beginning features an elderly couple huddled in the dark around a small glowing television. Just outside their window, constellations form what looks like a full grown sky monster ready to spread “Christmas cheer” across the dingy bar.

Sure enough, the beast sprays aerosol devilry over the couple which somehow produces a lively party and 1980’s Paul McCartney. What hex hath this charmer bestow on the towns people?!?!?
Whether you choose to believe that urban myth or not, we can confirm that McCartney wrote the track during sessions for the 1980 album, McCartney II. Paul plans to complete the trilogy with McCartney III, due out December 11. It’s his latest solo album since 2018’s Egypt Station.
