ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOX) - St. Charles Mayor Dan Borgmeyer drops the hammer on loud music and dancing along historic Main Street. He sent letters to liquor license holders Monday, warning that enforcement begins immediately.
There are no nightclubs along that stretch of businesses, but loud music and dancing has led to rowdy crowds and even violence, including a recent fatal shooting. Borgmeyer, who is known as "Mayor Footloose" to some, says crowds along the congested Main Street have become too rowdy lately.
"We have a lot of density in downtown St. Charles with restaurants and many of them serving liquor and many of them closing their kitchens earlier at night and things like that," Borgmeyer says. "And I think that's what fosters some of the difficulties we've had lately."
The ban applies to businesses with liquor licenses in the 100 to 300 blocks of North Main Street. Borgmeyer says he hopes businesses will cooperate so he will not have to mandate early closing times or "other measures to further control the situation."
"We've identified the types of behavior that are causing the problems tat were having and until that's mitigated ... we're going to become more restrictive rather than less," he says.
The city sent a letter to Main Street businesses warning of the enforcement, saying they risk losing their licenses.
