It was 70 years ago on this day in college football (1954), arguably the most significant victory in Wichita football history, as the Shockers went on the road and shut out 12th-ranked Cincinnati 13-0.

This was the only time in the history of the program the Shockers defeated a nationally-ranked team.

Wichita University came into the game with a record of 6-1; Cincinnati was 8-0, just two wins away from a potential undefeated season and a possible berth in the Gator Bowl.

However, the Shockers put a stop to Cincinnati's 16-game winning streak, the second-longest in the nation.

Cincinnati was ranked 5th in the nation in total offense, but scored zero points vs. the stingy Wichita defense. Cincinnati was #7 in the nation in rushing defense, yet the Shockers plowed through the Bearcats for 260 rushing yards.

Newspaper accounts referred to Wichita's "explosive line", "slashing backs", and the "lightning fast witch hunters from the wheat country". The Shockers ran their option attack using the Split-T formation, rotating four running backs and a pair of quarterbacks during the entire game.

The game was played before 20,000 fans at Nippert Stadium, and Cincinati only got inside the 30-yard-line one time against the Wichita defense.

The game was tied 0-0 at halftime, before WU broke through with a touchdown in the third quarter, although it was followed by a missed extra point for a 6-0 lead.

The Shockers then cemented the win with a double-reverse touchdown run with four seconds remaining in the game for the 13-0 road victory. This was the second of three consecutive shutouts for the Wichita defense late in the season.

With the win, the Shockers improved to 7-1, and had a three-game winning streak; Wichita was on its way to a 9-1 season under head coach Jack Mitchell.
