The New York Mets will likely be forced to navigate the crowded National League East without baseball's best closer in 2023.
Edwin Díaz is expected to miss the season 2023 season after tearing his right patellar tendon as he celebrated closing out a win-or-go home victory for Puerto Rico over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic Wednesday, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan:
Will Sammon of The Athletic says that Díaz will undergo surgery on his right knee Thursday, and the "general timeline is about eight months."
It's a brutal loss for the Mets, as Díaz was virtually unhittable in an All-Star season in 2022, posting a 1.31 ERA, 0.90 FIP and converting 32 of 35 save attempts.
The Mets rewarded Díaz with a five-year/$102 million deal this past offseason before he was due to become a free agent. It now appears that he'll miss the entirety of the first season of that pact.
