You probably don't want to hear about this any more (can't say I blame you) but Pat Mahomes talked about it, so it's my job to write about it. I'm sorry but those are simply the rules.

In a Monday afternoon interview with 610's The Drive, Mahomes gave his two cents regarding the failed attempt to sign All-Pro tackle Trent Williams this offseason. Williams, who ended up returning to San Francisco on a six-year, $130 million deal, was reported to be very seriously considering the Chiefs - and as Mahomes told The Drive, a deal between the two was "definitely close."

"Yeah, I definitely think it was close," Mahomes said. "I think it was down to us and the 49ers, and he ended up going to the 49ers. But to me it was more of a connection - he's from a town about 25 minutes away from my home town, and obviously a great football player. So we have a lot of mutual contacts, so I kind of reached out to see what his interest level would be like coming to Kansas City and I think it was close. But at the same time, I know he has a great connection with the coaching staff there and obviously the money didn't hurt too much going there. Obviously we missed out on that one, but I think we've got a lot of other great guys who will be able to compete."

So there you have it: the Chiefs almost got a very good player in free agency, but then they didn't. Is that an easier pill to swallow when Pat Mahomes says it? No? It's not? Ah! Well, nevertheless.
