Although Opening Day may have been about Zack Greinke's return to Kansas City, the sustained excitement through the Royals' first weekend of regular season games surely had just as much to do with Bobby Witt Jr. The debut weekend for the team's top prospect went about as well as anyone could have asked for, and on while talking to Kansas City 610's Fescoe In The Morning on Monday, team insider Josh Vernier expanded on just what made it so exciting to watch.
"There's a defensive gem in all three games, there's solid plate appearances in all three games, and really, he's already displayed all five tools," he said. "His ability to hit to average -- and I know the average isn't there, but again, we're three games in, and if you watch the approach, the kid has a plan of attack when he steps to the dish -- we know that the power is there, he showcased that last year at Omaha. And we've also seen him lift and drive the ball to deep left field in the first three games. The power, the average, the speed -- he almost beat an infield knock to the shortstop back on Opening Day -- you've obviously seen the arm, he showcased that on Opening Day with that beautiful backhand, the great transfer, and the bullet to first. So we've talked about the arm, the average, the legs, the power, and then of course the glove, the instincts -- on display with that game-saving play in the 10th inning back on Saturday. But what's impressed me most is the way he's continues to carry himself in the clubhouse. I'm not surprised by any of that ... when it comes to Bobby Witt Jr., he's not in awe of the third deck at a big league stadium, because he saw that third deck when he was six years old."
