Mike Golic to host new sports trivia show

Broadcasting legend Mike Golic is taking on a brand-new adventure.

As Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports notes, Golic is going to be the host of a new media-based trivia game for sports fans:

"Starting Nov. 10, fans will be able to play the “Fan Exam” exclusively and simultaneously on a network of official athletics websites and apps powered by Learfield’s SIDEARM network. It includes 150-plus collegiate athletic websites — including over 40 Power Five schools like UCLA, Syracuse and Ole Miss.

The show’s inaugural six-week, 12-episode run will go from Nov. 10 to Dec. 17. Every Tuesday and Thursday at 8 p.m. ET, fans will be able to answer a dozen college sports trivia questions in a non-elimination format. Top finishers win prizes after each week of play and at the end of the show’s six-week run."

Golic told McCarthy that he's excited for the opportunity because he believes it has some similarities to the flash-in-the-pan success of "HQ Trivia." Obviously, Golic and everyone involved would hope for a more sustained run of success than the aforementioned app had, but for a period in 2018, it was impossible not to know someone obsessed with the trivia game. A few years prior to that, "Trivia Crack" had a similar run where it was one of the most popular apps in the world. Given that COVID-19 may keep quite a few people in their homes over the next few months, it stands to reason that "Fan Exam" could become popular for a period, especially with such a big name attached to it.

Golic had a nine-season NFL career, playing for the Houston Oilers, Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins as a defensive lineman. However, he's become much more well known for his career in media. Golic has worked at ESPN since the late 1990s, most notably pairing with Mike Greenberg on ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike" from January of 2000 to November of 2017. Golic is currently working as part of ESPN's coverage of college football, though with the network laying quite a few people off, it's fair to wonder whether he'll be retained by the worldwide leader when his contract concludes at the end of 2020.

One thing that we do know is that the 57-year-old has said he doesn't plan to retire anytime soon. Perhaps this new venture with serve as the intro into his post-ESPN career.
