The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is offering a $10,000 reward for information on the gunman who killed Richard Allen Jefferson, the father of former NBA player Richard Jefferson, in an apparent drive-by shooting in 2018.
Jefferson believes this should have happened sooner, however.
The former NBA player and current broadcaster tweeted that he is offering his own reward in addition to the LAPD -- $50,000 for anyone with information on the gunman. It was something Jefferson said he offered to the LAPD two years ago when the investigation into his father’s killer began, but the police department said no.
Jefferson shared some of his feelings about the investigation when he tweeted out the reward.
Richard Allen Jefferson, 65, was fatally shot while standing on the sidewalk in Compton at about 6:35 p.m. on Sept. 19, 2018.
Per NBC Los Angeles, the LA County Sheriff’s Department said a dark-colored vehicle with several men was driving southbound on North Paulsen Ave. when numerous shots were fired at Jefferson.
Investigators believe the elder Jefferson was targeted by a gang solely because of his race and where he was standing at the time.
The elder Jefferson’s death came just one month before his son had announced his retirement after a 17-year career in the NBA that spanned across eight different teams, including the Nets, Cavaliers, Spurs, Warriors, Jazz, Bucks, Mavericks and Nuggets.
The younger Jefferson, who won an NBA title with the Cavs in 2016, was born in Los Angeles and lived his early life in the South Central area of the city before moving to Arizona with his mother after his parents got divorced. He currently works as a broadcaster for YES Network and ESPN, and hosts his own podcast.
NBC Los Angeles provided the information for anyone with information to call:
