The Royals have a young group, but have raved about the impact veterans like Zack Greinke have had on the team.
They could add to that group of veterans with Eric Hosmer, but that’s not looking likely.
Hosmer is available after getting designated for assignment by the Cubs. Things have been tumultuous for Hosmer since he left Kansas City to sign with the Padres ahead of the 2018 season. He never lived up to expectations in San Diego, then had underwhelming runs with the Red Sox and Cubs.
At this point, his best days are behind him, but he certainly knows what it takes to win in Kansas City. However, Royals manager Matt Quatraro didn’t seem particularly interested in a Hosmer reunion when asked about it on Fescoe in the Morning.
“I don’t know about that. I have not discussed that with anybody, but if you just take a quick look at the roster, we have Vinnie (Pasquantino) and (Nick) Pratto playing first and DHing. I would imagine my initial reaction would be no,” Quatraro said. “The unfortunate thing is you have roster limitations, too. So, you bring somebody in, like what you’re talking about, as not an everyday player, it takes somebody else’s spot that needs the at-bats or need the innings pitched.
“I understand your point, but (veteran leader is) not like a designated roster spot. We don’t have a spot for the tale-teller, or that kind of thing. That’s not to take anything away from Hosmer and his career, obviously a tremendous Major League career, but we haven’t even discussed that at all. Just you asking that question, the first thing that comes to mind is we’re playing two young guys in Vinnie and Pratto at first, and they DH, it does not seem like it would be a natural fit.”
Royals are building for the long haul right now, and Pasquantino and Pratto both figure to be part of their plans. Impacting their development by bringing in Hosmer ultimately might not be the most pragmatic long-term play.
