Astros Take 3-2 Lead Over Nationals In World Series

The series heads back to Houston with a chance for the Astros to close it out in six games

Led by an outstanding pitching performance from Gerrit Cole along with two-run blasts by Yordan Alvarez, Carlos Correa and George Springer, the Astros won their third straight against the Washington Nationals to take a 3-2 lead in the World Series.

Houston beat Washington 7-1 on Sunday night.

The series heads back to Houston on Tuesday with a chance for the Astros to close it out in six games.

Intrigue for Game 5 was heightened hours before the game, when it was announced Nationals ace Max Scherzer woke up with tightness in the neck area and would not be able to pitch. It was supposed to be a showdown between two of the game's best -- Cole and Scherzer.

Instead, the Nationals pitched Joe Ross and the Astros got to him early. Alvarez hit a two-run shot off Ross in the second inning after an infield single by Yuli Gurriel.

Correa's home run came in the fourth inning after a single by Alvarez.

Juan Soto hit a solo shot in the seventh for the Nationals only run.

Gurriel hit an RBI-single to score Springer in the eighth.

Then in the ninth, Springer blasted a two-run shot 435 feet to left field.

Cole was masterful on the mound, giving up just one run on three hits in seven innings. He struck out nine and walked two hitters.

Game 6 is Tuesday at Minute Maid Park. Justin Verlander is expected to start for the Astros. Stephen Strasburg is expected to take the mound for the Nationals.

First pitch is at 7:07 p.m. CT.
