The Wichita Wind Surge lost their first game in five days after a 5-2 defeat by the Arkansas Travelers on Wednesday night at Riverfront Stadium. Wichita starter Austin Schulfer allowed a pair of Arkansas runs to score in the first inning, and the Surge were unable to convert in scoring situations early. Schulfer would finish the night with four innings pitched, three earned runs, three walks, and strike out six. He would pick up his third loss, bringing his record to 1-3 on the year.
The Wind Surge committed four defensive errors in the game, a season high. They would also tie a season high with two of the Travelers runs being unearned.
In the bottom of the fifth, BJ Boyd tripled, followed by a double from Jermaine Palacios which cut into the Travelers lead. Ernie de la Trinidad would follow Palacios with a single, cutting the deficit once more. Wichita trailed 4-2 after the fifth inning.
The Wind Surge bullpen continued to be a bright spot. Calvin Faucher would come out of the bullpen in relief, tossing two and a third scoreless innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. Yennier Cano followed up, going an inning and two thirds, with no runs, one hit, no walks, and three strikeouts.
Elsewhere, former Wind Surge outfielder Gilberto Celestino made his debut with the Minnesota Twins, becoming the first former Surge player to reach the major league level.
Next up: game three of the series Thursday night, with the first pitch at 7:05pm. Wichita will start RHP Josh Winder (1-0, 1.48 ERA) against Arkansas's LHP Ian McKinney (2-0, 1.17 ERA).
