Over 140 economists and political scientists have written an open letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom, asking him to suspend California's AB-5 law which prevents individuals from working part time in a variety of indispensable positions, especially during the coronavirus crisis.
Economist Bill Evers, at the Independent Institute is one of the authors of the letter. He came on the program to explain that by prohibiting the use of independent contractor drivers, health care professionals, and workers in other critical areas, AB-5 is doing substantial, and avoidable, harm.
Evers points out that AB-5 hurts the very people who now have the fewest resources and the worst alternatives available to them during the Covid-19 shut down.
