There's a saying "where words fail, music speaks", and country star Lindsay Ell has done just that with her new single "make you" off her forthcoming album "heart theory".
It took Ell years to get to the point in her life where she could talk about two traumatic instances of rape that occurred, once by a church member at just 13, and again at 21.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Lindsay said it took her a very long time to come to terms with the guilt and shame she felt, but after some therapy and her amazing parents, the Canadian songstress felt the time was now.
"Make You" was released on what is known as "World Forgiveness Day"; and Ell believes she's at a point in her life both personally and with her songwriting, that she's able to do just that. Forgive.
Lindsay also plans to launch the Make You Movement, which help support at-risk youth and sexual assault survivors. The program will be in conjunction with the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
The proceeds from the single "make you" will benefit the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.
