As looting intensifies over Southern California, the City of Riverside has enacted an emergency curfew for tonight (June 1st) starting at 7pm and ending Tuesday morning (June 2nd) at 6am.

Although planned protests in Riverside over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis are expected to be peaceful, Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez has requested the curfew to maintain the peace and safety of Riverside citizens.

"Although we are expecting a peaceful and safe demonstration that will allow our community members to express their First Amendment rights, we will effectively address any attempts to disrupt those engaging in peaceful protest," he noted in a press release.

"Riverside is a city of unity and inclusivity, and we know our residents and businesses do not invite the criminal behavior we've witnessed elsewhere," he added.

During the curfew, no one will be allowed in any public place with the exception of:
  • Police, fire, or emergency operations personnel
  • Members of the National Guardor other responding military personnel
  • People travelling to or from work
  • Authorized members of the media
  • Individuals seeking or providing emergency medical care
  • Essential workers
  • Individuals experiencing homelessness

The curfew is not expected to last beyond tomorrow morning, but can be extended if Chief Gonzalez believes it is necessary.
