Officials from CAL FIRE / Riverside County Fire Department have announced they'll be conducting prescribed burns in the area of Lake Mathews near El Sobrante Road and Mocking Bird Canyon this Wednesday, May 22nd, and Friday, May 24th, in cooperation with the Riverside County Habitat Conservation Agency and Metropolitan Water District. Favorable weather will dictate the final date of the burns.
A press release from CAL FIRE / Riverside County Fire Department announced that a total of 350 acres of grassland will be burned, with the goal of eliminating non-native grass and reducing hazards posed by flammable vegetation. In addition, local firefighters will gain valuable training in wildland fire suppression.
Smoke will be visible from nearby communities, but is expected to disperse quickly, posing no health hazards. Burns begin after 6am and are typically concluded by noon the same day.
