As efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus increase, California Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered a mandatory, statewide order that people should stay at home, except to get food, care for a relative or friend, get necessary health care, or go to an essential job. People who go out should keep at least a six foot distance from others.
He emphasized that grocery stores, food establishments, banks, and pharmacies would remain open. The directive goes into effect at midnight Thursday evening.
"We need to meet this moment and flatten the curve together," he posted on social media.
The directive came shortly after a similar order given by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, in which he asked residents to limit "non-essential movement."
