As Carrie Underwood finds herself the latest country artist caught in the middle of a copyright infringement lawsuit, the Cadillac Three reflect on how they avoid having their songs being accused of having "substantial similiarity," especially since they write so much music not only for themselves, but also other artists.
"I mean, you gotta be careful with it," says lead singer Jaren Johnson in a statement from the trio's label. "Obviously you watch it."
"And you've gotta do it with your own songs, much less everybody else's songs," adds drummer Neil Mason. "Honestly, it's one of the reasons I don't listen to as much, especially Nashville country music, unless it's already out in the world because at that point I oughta be smart enough to not rip that off."
"You'll catch yourself, though," continues Jaren. "You'll be like, 'Man, that melody's right on top of 'Body Like A Back Road' or whatever. You can't do that."
"It's a tough thing," says Neil. "That's one of the, I guess, beauties, outside of all the other beauties of co-writing, is at least there's three people in the room that can kind of check each other and be like, 'Hey, isn't that on top of this that or the other'"
"Yeah, sometimes you have to be the buzz killer," concludes bass and steel guitar player Kelby Ray.
The Cadillac Three will perform at Boots in the Park in the Back Yard at SilverLakes in Norco, on Thursday, July 11th.
