Disney Parks to update Jungle Cruise, eliminating 'negative depictions of native people'

Major changes are coming to the theme park attraction.

Disneyland and Walt Disney World are continuing to make changes to their attractions to address diversity.

According to the Orange County Register, the Jungle Cruise will be eliminating scenes featuring shrunken head dealer Trader Sam and the safari group who climbed up a totem pole to escape a rhino.

The ride will come up with a new storyline, one of which will include a brand new scene with a half-sunken boat taken over by monkeys.

"Imagineers are constantly looking for opportunities to enhance experiences, and when it comes to updating classic attractions, they employ a very careful and thoughtful approach," Disney officials said.

"In this particular case, Imagineers created a storyline that builds upon what people love the most while addressing negative depictions simultaneously."

Last year, it was announced that Splash Mountain would be reimagined with the theme of Disney's 2009 film "The Princess and The Frog." The ride is currently based on the 1946 Disney film "Song of the South," which has long been criticized for employing racist stereotypes.

There has been no announcement on when work will begin at Disneyland or Walt Disney World for the new Jungle Cruise changes.
