Ashley McBryde has received high praise after showcasing some of her American Sign Language knowledge at a recent show.
LISTEN NOW: Ashley McBryde joins Rob + Holly for the Friday Night Takeover
A video shared via social media shows McBryde as she meets a young fan named Charlee who asked to join Ashley on stage. Before bringing her up, McBryde communicated amidst the cheering crowd with Charlee’s mother asking her “Is it OK? Is it good?” In ASL.
While McBryde says she’s not fluent in the language yet, she’s motivated to learn and has always been inspired by a friend in her home state of Arkansas.
“I’m learning,” she said of her ASL knowledge. “There was a guy in Little Rock in some of the bars I used to play who was as teacher at a school and he would bring members of the non-hearing community to my shows and sign and I thought it was so cool.”
She continued, “We have a lot of the non-hearing community at our shows and there’s usually ASL interpreters at the shows. How cool is that? And how dope would it be if I could tell them myself, ‘Thank you for being here.’”
Aside from allowing her to communicate with non-hearing fans, McBryde says her basic knowledge of the language has come in handy by helping her communicate with her team in emergency situations.
“Recently, it was bad. It was very hot where we were and there were a lot of people were passing out in the pit and I needed a way to tell my team that there was something wrong,” she said as she signed “emergency.” “Now, we have the ability to communicate like that.”
