With the song being an ode to a gesture she and her family hold near and dear of leaving a light on in the kitchen, McBryde found it extra-fitting to have her Mom make a cameo in the video.
Wilkins’ appearance comes at the very end of the black and white video as Ashley walks into the kitchen and sweetly embraces hands with her mom.
“There’s always a light on in my kitchen, always one on in mama’s, my sister always has one on,” McBryde said of the inspiration behind the song. “Even if it’s just the refrigerator light.”
McBryde elaborates on the meaning the of the simple gesture in the song, which she says ultimately represents comfort. “We know that the light on is on for comfort — all across the world it is,” she said. “It’s also a way to say ‘I’m thinking of you.’ The same comfort that you get from being around with a light on in the kitchen… it’s also like, ‘If you need me, I’m here.'”
McBryde says the song quickly took shape as a nod to her mother, as well as all the other mothers and those who offer comfort, support and light.
“It’s definitely inspired by my mother, but all of our mothers,” McBryde said. “And our sisters and people that had a hand in raising us.”
