Evans debuted the song at a large Australian music festival without any prior planning. The 37-year-old let his emotions drive the moment and ended up playing the song which would go viral the next day. “I hadn’t shown anyone the song at that point,” Evans told Audacy’s Rob + Holly of the on-stage moment he decided to go for it.
“I wrote it the week before and we landed in Australia over the weekend and whatever night this was — the following weekend or something like that — I walked over to the piano… was going to play another song, and just decided to play ‘Over For You’ instead for the first time.”
The song struck a chord with fans all over, especially knowing it came from the heart as Evans and former wife, Kelsea Ballerini, had announced their divorce just one month prior.
“The whole writing process for that song was cathartic process for a lot of reasons,” Morgan said. “When I woke up the next morning… it had kind of taken on a life of it’s own for other people. It’s been a beautiful thing to be a part of.”
While the performance of the song was spontaneous, raw and risky with such a public split, Evans says he’s glad he went for it before he overthought it. “As a songwriter, I’m super proud of the song,” said Evans. “I’m grateful that I played it early. If I had left it and had time to think about it, I 100% would’ve overthought it and not put it out.”
