Shoulder Pain is Becoming More and More Common. Here's What to Do About It.

Cover Image

It's no secret that shoulder pain is on the rise in 2019. Our "technology posture" from sitting on our phones, computers, and tablets is wreaking havoc on this awesome part of the body as we sit hunched forward to type, tap, and scroll away. Luckily, it doesn't take much effort to address this.

If you're lucky, you're addressing it proactively to prevent pain and keep good movement patterns. Otherwise, you're gonna do it to help reduce pain- which hopefully you've already seen a PT about- and build good movement patterns. Either way, it's a good idea to do today's #MobilityMonday drills regularly to keep your upper body healthy. (Ideally you're creating your own daily practice using your favorite past drills and the principles I've discussed, and these are just more to experiment with and implement on your own terms!)

They work great as a warmup in the gym, or as a standalone at any point in your day if you're feeling tight. You can use anything of similar height to replace the foam roller in the windmills. As you can see in the cover photo, you can do the wall slides without it as well- just imagine it's there as you press directly into the wall. Imagining it will help make sure you're going slow and applying pressure, which are the main benefits of using the foam roller.

This week's videos once again come from Coach Jordan Harder (follow him!) of Decater Performance in Issaquah, who you may remember from his awesome pointers on how to save your wrists during kettlebell work. He works primarily with high school athletes, but these drills work well with all sorts of people! Trust me, I use them with my "general population" clients too. Laborers, drivers, and desk workers all benefit from them... Hey, those describe a lot of the Rockaholics I meet!
