The Top 5 Black Label Society Songs to Fuel Your Next Workout

Cover Image
We’re a couple months away from the 20th anniversary of Black Label Society unleashing their debut album Sonic Brew on the world. If I had any patience I’d release this blog then and it’d be more fitting, but I don’t. And something about the new Mark Morton song featuring Mark Lanegan, Axis- which I listened to in the shower this morning- had me itchin’ for the outlaw vibes on “Losin Your Mind” (technically Pride and Glory, I know, but still...) and the softer melodies of “Like A Bird”. Songs like these showcase Zakk Wylde’s remarkable range and cement him as an all-time great guitar player and surprisingly apt singer. Let’s be real though, he’s at his best when he’s pummelling powerful pinch harmonics in our faces!

The massive grooves BLS has been laying down for almost 20 years have fueled countless workouts for me, including the majority of the early ones. I discovered BLS and the gym at the same time almost ten years ago. I can’t imagine one without the other. In honor of this, and the fact that Zakk is f***ing jacked, I thought I would attempt to crown their top 5 lifting anthems. This list was picked 100% subjectively by me and would probably look 100% different if I made it again tomorrow:

Doomsday Inc

Maybe I felt compelled to lead with both new-at-the-time songs from the Kings of Damnation compilation because sometimes songs released like that fly under the radar... Maybe the riffs are just that crushing. Either way, I’ve lifted a lot of weights to these two over the years.

Destruction Overdrive

I mean, just listen to that and tell me you don’t wanna do some pull ups!!

Super Terrorizer

Also known as the “'LIMP BIZKIT SUCKS %^#!' song" from their classic live album Alcohol Fueled Brewtality. An alternate euphemism for male genitalia is used in this clip, which features a young Rob Trujilllo from Metallica on bass.

Riders of the Damned

This might have been the toughest task, picking one song from Order of the Black, which was kind of the album that started it all for me. I got into BLS a few months before it came out, and was rabidly making my way through their impressive back catalog when it dropped. They were the majority of what I listened to for the next couple of years and Order of the Black has always remained heavy in my rotation.

What I love about Black Label Society is that you could talk to another one of their fans that would have a totally different list.  What’s funny to me is I bet I’d look at their list and be like “this isn’t MY list, but I can’t disagree with it. There’s so many awesome songs to choose from!” and they’d probably say the same about this one! No shortage of awesomeness when it comes to Black Label Society...Hell, I had to leave entire ALBUMS that I consider masterpieces off this. It was still fun to write. I hope you dig the tunes and they help you crush your next workout!

Oh shoot I almost forgot it’s #WeightRoomWednesday, where I usually give you actual workout advice, not just soundtrack recommendations. This week’s advice is don’t do this:
