Until this past winter storm hit the Seattle area, I really didn't know much about protecting my dogs' paws during the cold, snowy weather. And I feel really bad about it.
I had the dogs out in the snow yesterday when I started to notice small droplets of blood in one set of tracks. Mind you, we have 4 dogs and a total of 16 paws to check, but after examining them all I discovered the pads of one of Kai's back paws had split open.
I felt TERRIBLE, and immediately started doing my research.
A typical winter in Washington is fairly mild, so I had no idea there were potential risks associated with the weather, especially given the conditions our Snowmageddon brought to the PNW. Their paws might seem tough, but they can get quite beat up this time of year.
Here are the things I learned:
1. Get some balm for their paws and put it on before going outside in the elements. This is the kind we just picked up:
2. The booties route. Might take some getting used to, but it will be worth it in the long run. Just ask LuLu!
3. Towel off your dog's paws as soon as you get back inside to keep their paws dry.
I'm so glad I learned a lesson in paw care this week, my friends! Keep your pups safe, warm and protected from the elements this season, Rockaholics!
Happy Adventuring,
Taryn Daly
