How many years did you work at KISW? 10
What position(s) did you work at KISW? Promo Intern / Producer / Morning Co-Host
What are your three greatest memories at KISW? I have memories as a listener even before I worked there. Hard to pinpoint three memories but some things I was involved in producing as part of Twisted Radio was our annual "Nudestock", bringing a Japanese 7-11 worker to America to fulfill his dreams of driving big cars, shooting guns and dating blondes, and shipping a giant fake Orca whale from Scotland to try to scare the Sea Lions away at the Ballard Locks.
What’s a story you couldn’t tell people back in the day? Not much I couldn't say back in the day. Now that I am a High School teacher there may be a few i should not tell now!
What band were you most proud to bring to a bigger audience? With "Bob's Garage" we recorded what were new bands at the time like Queens of the Stone Age, Candlebox and The Toadies. But we also helped keep artists like BOC, Foghat, The Outlaws etc. relevant. I was proud to be a part of helping create that opportunity and it all started with a guy who wanted us to visit a record store to plug a Blue Oyster Cult concert!
How has Seattle changed the most? The separation of wealth, affordability of living and crime has made me barely recognize the city I was "Downtown" Joe in during the '90s.
What’s something you never thought you’d see? Me being a teacher or anything other than a Morning Radio host.
What’s your best memory of meeting a rock star? One of my first was meeting Paul Simon. He was kicking off a world tour and wanted industry feedback so myself, Steve Slaton and Steve Young were his "focus group". Having Paul Simon ask me if I thought he should add "Bridge over Troubled Water" to the encore even though is was technically "Artie's song" was a surreal moment.
Who was your best friend at the station back in the day? We were all friends but three mentors who stood out and really helped me get my start were Cathy Keller, Steve "Dan" Wilkie and Terry Gangstad.
Name a KISW band you still love! I will always associate Pearl Jam with my KISW days and still see them every chance I get.
Favorite concert from your time at KISW? Not sure but i do recall the brief stretch of time we were doing shows on the Pennisula being fun, Lalapalooza and Rockstock. Also enjoyed the Twisted Christmas shows we began producing at KISW.
What was your most memorable band interview? There were many. I tend to remember the ones that did not go well. For some reason the Stone Temple Pilots did not like it when I told them I loved listening to the new record while I was getting dental work done.
What's Joe Bryant up to these days? He oversees the student-run radio station at Mercer Island High School! The future of radio is in the hands of a legend!
