Where Are They Now: Steve Slaton

#KISW50
Steve Slaton, KISW alumni

How many years did you work at KISW? 1973-1992

What position(s) did you work at KISW? Best known for afternoons & evenings

What are your three greatest memories at KISW?
1. The great people I was able to meet inside & outside the radio station.
2. The ridiculous amount of quality music the listeners and I were able to discover & share.
3. The sheer amount of time I spent there, went from 20 to 39 years of age.

What’s a story you couldn’t tell people back in the day? I suggest reading Beau Phillips book for some of that.

What band were you most proud to bring to a bigger audience? I was fortunate to be able to play a lot of what is now considered to be classic when it was new.
During my college radio days in Tacoma I played Abbey Road the day it came out. I know there were people who heard it and became Beatles fans at that point. At KISW the list would have to include Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Hendrix, Heart, heck I remember playing Soundgarden in the '80s on KISW.

How has Seattle changed the most? Except for the Sonics, Seattle was not a "major league" city when I started KISW. With all the business & industry centered here now, in addition to now having the NFL & MLB, we are now big time on any list.

What’s something you never thought you’d see? Spending 50 years in radio, all in Seattle/Tacoma.

What’s your best memory of meeting a rock star? Many were NOT rock stars yet. It was fun to experience the ascension.

Who was your best friend at the station back in the day? The listener.

Name a KISW band you still love! One??!! Surely you jest.

Favorite concert from your time at KISW? The Who in 1976 at the Coliseum remains a fave. I saw Led Zeppelin at Green Lake in Seattle in 1969 but was still 4 years away from joining KISW.

What was your most memorable band interview? An interview with AC/DC that Atlantic Records pressed on vinyl and sent to radio around the country. On one side I asked the questions, on the other side my question was edited out and the local DJ could ask it.

What's Steve Slaton up to now? Retired, day trader, real estate magnate and Jazz record collector.
